Andy Gathergood was born in Farnborough, Kent in England in 1974. Andy has firmly established himself as one the UK’s most engaging actors, marking him out as a unique actor to call upon.
On film, Andy is best known for JOURNEY'S END (2018), THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY (2018), RISEN (2016), ANOTHER MOTHER'S SON (2017) and LECTURE 21 (2008). Further credits include THE DEATH OF STALIN (2018).
On TV, his portrayal of Skunkhair Tom Wallace earned him great praise in the Emmy and Golden Globe winning Series HATFIELDS & MCCOYS (2012).
He is also best known for LIVING THE DREAM (2019), NO OFFENCE (2018) THE HOUR (2011), CROSSING LINES (2013), THE LAST KINGDOM (2015), FIVE DAUGHTERS (2010), CRIMINAL JUSTICE (2008) and the BAFTA award winning Short Film UNTIL THE RIVER RUNS RED (2010).
Raised in the small country village of Hartley Wintney west of London, Andy grew up with a passion for football, puppets and monkeys.
It was a school play at the age of 17 that gave him his first taste of acting. Heroic lead? Well, not exactly. It was a Greek comedy and joy of joys a fruity whore would be essential to everyone's fun. Now, Andy went to an all boys Catholic School and enthusiasm for the part was somewhat thin. So, with no takers the role had to be thrust upon some poor sod. Rather less than thrilled there he stood, blonde wig, lip gloss and after much protest an unnecessarily short mini skirt. The days to follow would be a never ending barage of seductive cues to go hit on one of his very reluctant best mates. Apparently, on the opening night the visiting nuns hunkering in the front row got to see a bit too much of Gods gift and had the shock of their lives! An ecclesiastical scandal which ultimately proved Andy's mini skirt protest to be wholly justified! It's true to say that this wasn't quite how Gathergood had envisaged his stage debut. However, he quickly discovered it was a hell of a lot less awkward to just commit to the part than stand off. A lesson he still remembers and uses today along with better supporting underwear. That said, Gathergood’s entrance into the profession was incredibly still over ten years off.
In 1992, he went to Birmingham to study Landscape Architecture. After 3 years proving he could tell the difference between a bush and a tree, Andy graduated. A sales career followed. However, the curiosity of acting was still very much bubbling away.
In 2001, Andy went on a yearlong adventure to South America. The trip remains one of his most challenging and inspiring of journeys. He still holds with great fondness the intoxicating mix of feeling fantastically alive yet super vulnerable. Andy gained a great many things from his adventure, with one a supreme clarity in his feelings towards acting. So much so that on his return, Andy finally made the decision to front his urge and see what all the fuss was about.
After his initial shock at being one of the oldest at drama school his journey so far has been well worth the wait. Upon finishing his training Gathergood went straight to work both on television and film, appearing in the obligatory Brit cop show THE BILL and starring opposite John Hurt and Noah Taylor in the popular Italian novelist Alessandro Barrico’s debut feature LECTURE 21.
Andy next appeared in the BBC’s compelling and award winning thriller CRIMINAL JUSTICE(2008) starring Ben Whishaw.
2010 was also the year Gathergood appeared in the BAFTA award winning Short Film UNTIL THE RIVER RUNS RED directed by the highly acclaimed young Scottish director Paul Wright.
